The village is located 46 kilometres  south-east of Rethimno on the road Rethimno – Panormo – Perama – Mourtzanas – Axos – Anwgeia. Axos is situated in a rich valley on the  north part of  Psiloritis. Abundance of water exists and a public fountain, that is used from the Midcentury until today. 

Axos was an important ancient city,  probably built when the Dorians came to Crete (around in the 1.000 b.C). It had for its harbour Bali and a big wall around the city existed.
