Sitia is on the north coast in the bay of Sitia. The harbour is the best in the eastern part of the island and can accommodate small fishing boats and larger cargo and transport boats as well. Around the harbour there are many restaurants and tavernas as well as coffee shops. East of the harbour of Sitia there is a sandy beach within walking distance from the town. It has an airport and a port in direct contact with Piraeus and the islands of the S.E. Aegean. The weekly boats for Rhodes leave from here.

Sitia is famous for its clean beaches with plentiful sand which have been awarded the E.U. blue flag and for its mild climate, its hospitable fun loving sociable people and for its fine wines.

The population of Sitia and its villages is traditionally made up of farmers and fisherman, simple, hard-working people -  descendants of an ancient race, people faithful to their traditions which have remained unchanged over thousands of years. It is for this reason that the region's products are  especially pure and delicious.

Tourism has expanded rapidly in the last few years with a range of hotels from economy to luxury. Important future sources of wealth for the area could be the archaelogical sites which are constantly being unearthed,  the well-organized and environmentally-friendly use of the many sites of natural beauty and the maintenance of the traditional character of Sitian life.
